To Our Valued Partners in Transit and Urban Mobility,

As the Chief Technology Officer of BusPas, I am writing to share our vision and commitment to the responsible development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) for transit agencies, municipalities, and the communities we serve. At BusPas, we believe that AI has the power to transform urban mobility, making cities smarter, safer, and more efficient. However, we also recognize that this transformation must be guided by sustainable practices, ethical principles, and a commitment to transparency, fairness, and collaboration.

I firmly believe that this is what sets us apart from other stakeholders in the industry. I draw immense pride knowing that our technology is doing good, and helping cities do well.

Our mission at BusPas is to empower cities with AI solutions that not only enhance urban mobility and safety but do so in a way that puts the decision-making processes squarely in the hands of those who serve the public. We understand that the success of any technology, particularly AI, depends on its ability to meet the needs of diverse communities while maintaining the trust of the people it aims to serve. This is why we are dedicated to ensuring that our AI systems are designed with public interest at the forefront and that collaborative bodies, such as transit agencies and municipal authorities, are in control of how data is collected, stored, protected, shared, and used.

The ORA platform, at the heart of our AI-driven solutions, is built with a commitment to responsible AI practices. ORA enables cities to access and manage real-time sensor data and other insights in a manner that safeguards privacy, respects ethical and sustainable standards, and addresses the unique challenges faced by each community. By putting powerful data-driven tools in the hands of our partners, we aim to provide transit agencies and municipalities with the capabilities to make informed decisions that improve the quality of life for their residents.

We recognize that AI, like any technology, is not a one-size-fits-all solution. The specific needs, priorities, and values of each community must be considered when designing AI systems for urban mobility. To this end, BusPas is committed to a collaborative approach, working closely with transit agencies, city planners, and other stakeholders to ensure that our solutions are aligned with the goals and concerns of the communities we serve. This approach involves engaging with local authorities, listening to feedback, and continuously refining our technology based on real-world experiences.

One of our guiding principles is that AI should empower—not replace—human decision-making. We believe that the role of AI is to augment the expertise of transit agencies and municipalities by providing actionable insights and data-driven recommendations. At the same time, we acknowledge that humans should remain in control of the final decisions. Our technology is designed to enhance, rather than dictate, the decision-making processes, ensuring that the solutions implemented are truly in the best interest of the public.

In implementing Responsible AI, we are also deeply committed to ensuring fairness and inclusivity. AI systems must be designed to work equitably across different demographics, languages, and geographic regions. At BusPas, we actively work to identify and mitigate bias in our AI models and to ensure that our solutions are fair and inclusive for all. We do this by setting concrete fairness criteria, using representative datasets, and continuously evaluating our models for disparities in performance across different user groups.

We understand that privacy and data protection are paramount, especially when dealing with sensitive information that impacts public safety and mobility. Our AI systems are built to comply with the highest data protection standards, including GDPR in the EU, CCPA in the US, and PIPEDA in Canada. We use offline edge-computation, meaning that we do not record or save any video or audio. We pre-process all sensor data locally in the device, keeping only the insights, which do not contain any private data. This ensures that personal information is protected throughout the entire data lifecycle. ORA Platform uses only the KPIs extracted from this data to help city stakeholders and operators to improve their operations.

The deployment of AI solutions in urban mobility must also be accompanied by a commitment to ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and improvement. At BusPas, we believe that responsible AI does not end at deployment; it requires continuous oversight and adaptation. We are committed to working alongside our partners to ensure that our technology evolves to meet changing needs and addresses emerging challenges in a timely manner.

As we look to the future, we are excited about the possibilities that AI presents for improving urban mobility and making cities more livable. However, we are equally aware of the responsibilities that come with developing and deploying such powerful technologies. Our commitment to responsible AI is not just a set of principles; it is a promise to our partners and the communities we serve that we will always prioritize sustainable and ethical practices, collaboration, and public trust in our work.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Together, we can shape a future where AI serves as a force for good, enhancing the quality of life for everyone in our cities. I look forward to working with you as we continue on this journey toward a smarter, safer, and more equitable urban future.

Sincerely,
Wissem Maazoun
