MONTREAL, October 26, 2020 /CNW Telbec/ – Quebec’s transportation networks will soon benefit from innovative new technologies to enhance urban mobility. Quebec’s Minister of Economy and Innovation, Pierre Fitzgibbon, is allocating funding of $5.6 million for the Tangente AI project, which aims to develop an open and participatory data platform for stakeholders in the smart mobility sector.

Tangente AI is one of three major projects in transport intelligence selected by the government to position Quebec as a leader in transportation, particularly in smart cities and mobility.

The total cost of the Tangente AI project is estimated at $11.6 million over three years. It will be carried out by BusPas, KPI Digital, and Enseicom, in collaboration with various organizations providing passenger transport services, including the Société de transport de Laval.

Additionally, several researchers from Quebec universities, including McGill, Concordia, Polytechnique Montreal, HEC Montreal, Université de Sherbrooke, UQAM, and UQTR, will participate in developing methods and tools related to data processing. Thus, the project will involve significant contributions from the scientific community.

Primarily based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology, the project will utilize smart, solar-powered devices at bus stops, along with integrated sensors capable of measuring crowding, air pollution, and noise levels in the surroundings. These sensors will collect data on passenger mobility conditions, traffic flow, and the urban environment. The project will also include web applications for public transport network operators and a mobile app for passengers.

This is a unique opportunity for these organizations to demonstrate the capabilities of new IoT and artificial intelligence technologies in mobility applications on a city-wide scale.

The project completed its first phase in summer 2020, and a pilot trial will take place in early 2021. This trial will test sensors at about forty bus stops and shelters of the Société de transport de Laval.
